(चरकसंहिता)Ayu means the combination of body, sense organs, mind and self (soul).
Ayurveda is the combination of 2 words: Ayur and Veda
- Ayur meaning The Whole Lifespan
- Veda meaning Total knowledge or wisdom.
“Ayuhu vedayati iti ayurvedaha”
The science that tells us about Ayu (Life) is known as ayurveda – the science of life.
हिताहितंसुखंदु : खमायुस्तस्यहिताहितम्|
मानंचतच्चयत्रोक्तमायुर्वेदुः स उच्यते||
(Charaka Samhita)Ayurveda explains what is good or bad, happy or unhappy life and describes its promoters and non- promoters, measure, nature and the guidelines for what is essential and irrelevant for a long life.
Ayurveda has been practiced in India for at least 5,000 years. The theory behind Ayurvedic medicine is taken from several sacred Indian Sanskrit texts written between 1500 BC and 400 AD and it is thought to be one of the oldest forms of healing system.

- Swasthasya Swathya Rakshanam (Prevention of the disease is the primary aim)
- Aturasya Vikar Prashamanam (to completely eradicate the disease or dysfunction of body)
Ayurveda’s objective is to help an healthy person to maintain good health and the diseased person to regain good health.
समदोषुः समाहिश्च समधातुमलहियुः |
प्रसन्नात्मेन्द्रियमनाुः स्वस्थ इत्यहिधीयते||
(Sushruta Samhita)One’s whose dosas, Agni, functions of dhatu and malas are in the state of equilibrium and who has cheerful mind, intellect and sense organs is termed as ‘swastha’ (Healthy)
- The Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha (vital humors) are in balance.
- Agni (the digestive fire) is balanced.
- Dhatus (the 7 body tissues) are functioning normally.
- Mala (the waste products) is produced and eliminated normally.
- The Mana, Indriya and Atma (mind, senses and consciousness) are working in blissful harmony.
